Monday, June 14, 2010

This brings us to our last week at Pembroke as 5th Graders!

Just a few things to remember for this last week:

1. Tuesday is Pembroke's Spirit Day.  Please remember to send your child with the proper attire, shoes, sunscreen, and a bottle of water with his or her name on in.

2. We will be collecting textbooks and supplies next week.  If your child has anything that belongs to Pembroke at home, please send this in with your child on Monday.  Most of you will only have the Everyday Math Student Reference Book at home. Please be on the lookout for calculators, math templates, library books, etc....

3. As we will be cleaning out our desks and coat cubbies, please send your child in with 1-2 plastic grocery bags, so that they may have a place to carry their items home.

4.  The 5th Grade Breakfast is from 10:00 to 11:30 on Thursday.

5.  The 5th Grade Picnic is from 1:00-3:00 on Thursday as well.

6.  Friday is a 1/2 day for students.

It's been great getting to know all of you this year!  Have a great summer!

Mrs. Hart

READING

Next week, we will continue immersing ourselves in poetry. In order to truly understand poetry, one needs to immerse themselves in it, so that they understand the structure, themes, and common characteristics of poetry. As they read, students will apply the active reading strategies they have learned during previous units of study. They will learn how to lift information from the page, develop theories about the meanings of the poems and talk about what they are thinking.

We have also been working on figuring what themes are present in a poem/story, and trying to look beyond what the text is actually telling you.

WRITING

Next week, students will begin choosing poems that they would like to bring to publication.  We have been learning about line breaks, symbolism, and choosing better words.

January 22

Announcements:  There was a white apron left in the classroom after our holiday breakfast.  We also found an extra griddle.  Please drop me an email if either of these is yours, and I will make sure it is returned to you.

Next week is the start of  "Trashless Thursdays".  Every Thursday, students are encouraged to bring a "trashless" lunch.  A trashless lunch is one in which nothing disposable is included, (i.e. juice boxes/Capri Suns, plastic bags, plastic utensils, paper bags etc.). Thank you for your help as we work toward making our school community a little more “green”.

IMPORTANT DATES:
1/27 Vocal Music Concert at Groves

2/5   Report Card Release Day
        Talent Show at lunch
2/10 Battle of the Books
2/11 Jump Rope for Heart 10:30-11:30

Unit 5 Math tests will be sent home next week.  Please review and return to school with your child, so that it may be placed in your child's portfolio.

• Concepts from Unit 6 next week will include:
-organizing data in a graph or chart

Please watch the blog for updates on math quiz/test dates.

Please continue to ensure that students are reviewing all of their math facts for at least 15 minutes a night. They can use any method they choose including flash cards or computer programs. Mathfactscafe.com is a great resource for this. I will be giving you more great websites for practicing math facts as we move through the school year.

READING

Next week, we will continue to learn skills for engaging in a meaningful book discussion with our peers. Concepts will include:
-determining problem areas in their discussions
-bringing more individuals into the discussion
-holding back a bit if you feel you are dominating the discussion
-staying on topic
-digging deeper into the meaning of the text

As you monitor your child’s home reading, continue to ask them questions about what they are reading, especially questions that practice the strategies they are learning in class that particular week. The more children read, and the more they practice these strategies, the better readers they will become.

WRITING
Next week we will begin our research reports.  Students will be given a calendar that will outline the pace of the project (as there are many steps involved).  This calendar will be kept in students' homework binders so parents will be able to monitor their child's progress.  Though ample time will be given in class to complete each step, some students may need extra time at home to stay caught up.  Please do not allow your child to go ahead of the calendar, as they will be given lessons in class on how to go about each step in the process.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES

Social Studies tests for Chapter 4 & 5 will be sent home next week.  Please review and return to school with your child.
Next week we will switch to science and start our Motion and Design unit.

Students will continue to learn how to label all of our United States. They will be given ample time in class to accomplish this task over the next couple of months once they have completed each lesson from our Social Studies Alive text.      -Test Unit 5

WRITING
Students worked very hard to complete their fiction stories.  We will celebrate next week during a         Choc-o-Lit House.  The room will set up like an old-fashioned coffee house where students will choose one published story to share with their peers while enjoying hot coco and cookies.
We will also start brainstorming ideas for our research essays.  Students will be given a list of possible topics to choose from, or they can come up with their own, as long as it is a "scholarly" topic.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES
Students will share their Early Explorer projects with the rest of the class.  They will use this information from the presentations to complete their packets for Chapter 4-5.  The quiz has been post-poned until Thursday, January 21.

After the quiz, we will switch gears...no pun intended...and start our Motion and Design unit in science.
Students will continue to learn how to label all of our United States. They will be given ample time in class to accomplish this task over the next couple of months once they have completed each lesson from our Social Studies Alive text. Please check in periodically with your child to see how they are progressing.
