READING

Next week, we will continue immersing ourselves in poetry. In order to truly understand poetry, one needs to immerse themselves in it, so that they understand the structure, themes, and common characteristics of poetry. As they read, students will apply the active reading strategies they have learned during previous units of study. They will learn how to lift information from the page, develop theories about the meanings of the poems and talk about what they are thinking.

We have also been working on figuring what themes are present in a poem/story, and trying to look beyond what the text is actually telling you.

WRITING

Next week, students will begin choosing poems that they would like to bring to publication.  We have been learning about line breaks, symbolism, and choosing better words.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES

This week's concepts in Social Studies will include:
*The Middle Colonies

*The Southern Colonies

READING
This week, we will begin our first genre study, poetry.

WRITING
This week, students will complete their Powerpoint presentation about their research topic.

Our next writing unit is poetry, which ties in nicely with our reading unit.  Students will begin free-style writing of poetry in their writing notebooks, following the models that they will be reading.  Once they have a nice collection of poems in their notebook, they can then choose which ones they will want to bring to publication.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES
The science test on Motion and Design will be graded and sent home on Tuesday of this week.

We are switching back to Social Studies again! Our next unit is our Colonization Unit. The Colonization Unit is a Multiple Intelligence Unit. That means that students will be creating mini-projects throughout the unit that will help them learn about and show evidence of learning about the different topics in the unit. They will be able to choose between projects that include writing, art, drama, technology, or music.

This week's concepts in Social Studies will include:
*The story of Pocahontas and John Smith
*The settlement of the colony of Plymouth
